My Writing Journey

The Story Behind the Stories

My journey as a writer started on the shores of Virginia Beach, where my father put a fishing rod in my hands at just three years old. From that day forward, we’d cast for croakers and spot from the surf, and my mother would fry up our catch for dinner. I remember thinking it was the best meal I’d ever had.

The summer I turned five, my dad pushed me into my first wave on a surfboard. It took me most of that hot July to finally stand up, but I’ll never forget the feeling of riding that first wave all the way to shore. I’ve been a waterman ever since.

Over the years, those experiences turned into something more. They became stories.

From Catch a Florida Keys Grand Slam to The Virginia Beach Guide Series, my books are built on the people, places, and moments that shaped my life on the water.
Along the way, I combined a degree in photography with a career in communications, but storytelling has always been the through line.

Today, my focus is on outdoor storytelling, with an emphasis on marine conservation and recreational fisheries. Whether I’m writing a book, an article, or working with a brand, the goal is the same: Tell stories that feel real, connect with people, and leave a lasting impression.
I’ve spent my life chasing those stories.

First, they were written in salt spray and sunrises. Later, I found them in conversations with guides, conservationists, and business owners who all share a deep connection to the water.

That same drive, to find the heart of a story and bring it to life, is what shapes my work today.

The best stories don’t just inform, they stay with you.
